Foreign minister AK Abdul Momen on Monday said that the Bangladesh Nationalist Party made a big mistake by not coming to the national election scheduled on January 7.

‘They (BNP) were a big party, but they will be destroyed due to the lack of leadership. They are no longer a political party, they are now terrorists. Terrorists never can win,’ he said.

Momen, the ruling Awami League nominated candidate for Sylhet-1 in the 12th Jatiya Sangsad elections, came up with the comments while conducting an election campaign in the city’s Nayasarak area at noon.

He said that the BNP was busy with arson terrorism and secret killing. So, they had no space in the country.

‘Awami League is a party of development and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina made all the progress in the country,’ he said.

He claimed that massive development had been done in Sylhet during the regime of this government.

‘The government has done huge developments and will do more in the sectors, including education and healthcare that need to be developed,’ Momen said.

The minister also said that the voting would be held in a festive atmosphere in Sylhet on January 7.

‘The people of Sylhet will go to the polling stations like the past. In electoral campaigns, I am getting a huge response from the voters,’ he added.

Later, Momen participated in a function organized on the occasion of Christmas Day at the Presbyterian Church of Nayasarak. He exchanged greetings with the people of the Christian community there.

Sylhet City Corporation mayor Anwaruzzaman Chowdhury, Sylhet Zilla Parishad chairman Nasir Uddin Khan, the metropolitan unit AL vice-president Fayzul Anwar Alaor and Pradip Bhattacharya, its general secretary Zakir Hossain, joint secretary Azadur Rahman Azad, organising secretary Arman Ahmed Shiplu, among others, were present at the event.
